East Sweden Game is a co-working space in Linköping where entrepreneurs, game developers and digital creators in computer games and digital experiences gather to work, develop and create new innovations.
Collaboration brings success
Thanks to the collaboration between many organisations, East Sweden Game has become a success story. In just one year, this co-working space has grown to over 400 square meters with offices for up to ten gaming studios, with access to conference rooms and a unique accelerator program.
The basic idea is that people and companies with different orientations and starting positions will meet, learn and develop together. Therefore, collaboration is important between business, startups, universities and public actors such as incubators, science parks and Vinnväxt initiatives such as Visual Sweden, explains Tomas Ahlström, project manager for the East Sweden Game.
“The computer games industry is often about entertainment. However, technology, frameworks and methods from the computer games industry can also benefit from traditional industries such as medicine, construction and education, etc. Here, Visual Sweden provides a broad network of contacts with organizations that often see the benefits of technology from the gaming industry. Together we offer a unique platform for developing innovations at the forefront of digital experiences, ranging from office space, consulting and financing,” says Tomas Ahlström.
Well-adapted innovation system
In the region, there are programmers, engineers, computer science and system developers and a university with relevant excellent education and research. There is access to excellence in visualization, digital media and technical development, a reason for game development to be a vibrant industry supported by collaboration in a strong innovation system, including the Vinnväxt initiative Visual Sweden.
“Visualization is a key part of game development. Through our cooperation, East Sweden Game will be closer to research and development in visualization technology, and vice versa, our companies and other players will approach the game developers,” says Anders Carlsson, Visual Sweden Process Manager.
“A growing area in several industries are games for learning and gaming as motivators for changing behavior and attitudes. There are projects in Visual Sweden’s portfolio that focus on this. Additionally, game developers often have skills that can be applied in other sectors. Our companies have a great need for skilled labor,” continues Anders Carlsson.
Attractive even for enterprises
East Sweden Game has also an aim to attract established companies, who increasingly develop technology on gaming platforms for visualization and simulation.
“The gaming industry is often incorrectly linked with just entertainment, but it is a growing and extremely dynamic area used in widely different fields, such as medicine, health, flight, visualization, AI and mathematics. Many companies today implement elements of game development in their operations and Linköping can be a hub and development arena for these too,” says Carolina Olsson, community manager at East Sweden Game.
